Hughes Development Corporation – Bull Street Neighbourhood, South Carolina

Columbia, South Carolina’s historic Bull Street neighbourhood (181-acre urban infill site in the state’s capital city) resides at the intersection of landmark architecture, contemporary needs, and an evolving population. Faced with its multi-dimensional needs, the Bull Street Form-Based Code was created to implement the Duany, Plater-Zyberk and Company masterplan that represents the tenets of smart growth in that it incorporates multi-modal transportation patterns, the preservation of historically significant structures, and a mix of land uses, and overall sense of community.

The Bull Street Neighbourhood includes the preservation of landmark buildings and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings on the site while maximising the economic impact of the site for the City of Columbia and its citizenry. Regarding infrastructure and connectivity, the Bull Street Neighbourhood integrates into and becomes part of the City of Columbia via its un-gated entrances and traffic calming techniques that improve safety and promote all modes of transportation.
